State Senator Kirk Watson issued the following statement Monday regarding Dr. Francisco Cigarroa’s announcement that he will step down as Chancellor of the University of Texas System:
Francisco Cigarroa inherited an excellent university system in 2009. He leaves the UT System, along with the state of Texas, even stronger and smarter. The medical schools in Austin and the Valley, and the work he did to help build them, are particularly important chapters of his substantial legacy.
I hope the Board of Regents will embrace this opportunity to find a successor who will live up to Dr. Cigarroa’s standard. This critical moment requires an open process that puts the students and faculty of UT System institutions – and the people of Texas – first.
