Senator Kirk Watson, Chair of the Texas Senate Democratic Caucus, and Yvonne Davis, Leader of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement Tuesday regarding Governor Perry’s “State of the State” address:
This was a political speech short on specifics and far removed from the priorities of hard-working middle-class Texans. It is stunning that the Governor focused on charter and private schools without committing to invest in our public school system – especially given the failure last session to cover growth in Texas’ public schools. The state’s healthcare needs and resources were all but ignored. We congratulate the Governor for finally embracing our calls for budget honesty. But even the encouraging remarks regarding both infrastructure and transparency demonstrate how much more there is to do.
We share the Governor’s enthusiasm about the state of the Texas economy. And we commend the workers and employers who are helping to fuel Texas’ prosperity.
But politicians should not take credit for others’ success. And they should never cite the economy as their justification for undermining the very things that help Texans proceed down the path to success. Governor Perry should focus on creating more opportunity and prosperity for hard-working Texans, not trying to convince voters that he deserves credit for other’s accomplishments.
The fact is that Texas’ economy and its workers, business owners and employers need a very few basic things from those in control of the legislature:
The fact is that in every single one of these areas, Texas can do much better than it’s been doing under this Governor, and hard-working Texans deserve much better than they’ve been getting.
The legacy of recent legislative sessions has been one of mistakes and regrets. We urge the Governor to reverse that legacy, fix those problems and bring reforms state government so badly needs. It’s time to start playing the constructive role in the economy that Texas workers and businesses need the state to play.
Texas Democrats will work with all sides this session to:
The simple truth is that we all love Texas. We want Texas to enjoy success in this century just as it did in the past one. And we know that in all of these areas, Texas can do better.
No more excuses – it’s time for Texas to do better.
