Senator Kirk Watson released the following statement today regarding the presentation by the Office of the Comptroller of Public Accounts before the Legislative Budget Board:
I’m very pleased that government reforms I proposed have provided Texans with more information regarding their state budget. Texas will need to continue to be more open and honest about its budget and the budgetary processes in preparation for the 83rd Legislative Session. During the last session, I advocated for the Honesty Agenda — more than a dozen pieces of legislation focused on budget transparency and good governance practices. Many items from my Honesty Agenda were incorporated into the final appropriations bill, while others are being discussed today as smart tools to implement for next session.
One successful piece of the Honesty Agenda called for the Comptroller of Public Accounts to report annually to the Legislative Budget Board regarding the financial condition of the state. This morning, the Office of the Comptroller of Public Accounts presented their first report. It created an opportunity for fiscal matters to be disclosed and for legislators to ask questions. Notably, the last time the Legislative Budget Board met publicly was November 15, 2010.
I was glad to attend this meeting today.
I’m committed to seeing greater budget transparency and honesty in Texas. Texans deserve to know how the state stewards its money. And today’s presentation helps us to be more prepared for the tough decisions ahead.
