State Senator Kirk Watson issued the following statement Thursday following the Sunset Advisory Commission staff recommendation to close the Austin State Supported Living Center:
This recommendation doesn’t surprise anyone. The problems at the Austin State Supported Living Center have been well documented, and they’ve persisted even after repeated efforts to address them. It’s really a shame this state hasn’t done more to care for its most vulnerable citizens. And so it comes to this.
The report finds that this facility has failed the people who rely on it. But shuttering a building doesn’t erase that failure. If anything, it cements it. It’s well past time for a serious conversation about how best to care for our friends, neighbors and loved ones who have long needed the state’s attention. Simply closing this facility will not ensure safety, dignity, and respect for Texans living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
