The Nature Conservancy in Texas Endorses SB 1454
March 21, 2017
For more than 50 years, The Nature Conservancy has worked to protect the integrity of Texas’ vast array of natural resources. That’s why we are strongly in favor of SB 1454, sponsored by Senator Kirk Watson, and the companion HB 3451, filed by Rep. Lynn Stucky, which require a study on the use of lethal pesticides for feral hog control.
While we recognize the size and severity of the feral hog threat to Texas’ economy and ecosystem, it is our position that the very size of the hog population has the potential to create unforeseen negative consequences to Texas lands and waters. Consider these questions: How can we ensure other animals do not consume the pesticides pills meant for feral hogs? Are hunters at risk of inadvertently consuming the meat of a poisoned animal? Will scavenger wildlife or carrion birds feed on a poisoned hog and spread the pesticide to other animals? At this point, there are far more questions than answers. Moreover, there is no available research to ensure this type and method of poison will have minimal repercussions on our rivers, streams or soil health.
Strong science should lead our actions in this matter. The Nature Conservancy advises caution in moving forward with a plan to utilize lethal pesticides and recommends additional studies of potential outcomes.
