UT gets $3 million for cancer research

The University of Texas received millions more for cancer research Thursday afternoon.

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute presented the university with a $3 million check.

Some of the research will include the study of engineered antibodies. These antibodies can be used to fight breast cancer, and help with the development of a lymphoma vaccine.

Sen. Kirk Watson is a cancer survivor and co-authored the bill that made the grant possible.

The achievement goes beyond science.

"It will be as curing and as sustaining for our economy as it is for many of those individuals who will benefit," Watson said.

The grant is part of $61 million in inaugural grants being given out by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.
