State Senator Kirk Watson, (D) Austin, filed a package of bills aimed at cleaning up the state budget. The bills call for putting the budget process online and preventing dedicated money from going to the wrong purposes. Another bill focuses on the Children's Health Insurance Program. It creates a constitutional amendment asking voters to approve full funding of the program. "This is not a partisan thing, this is just about open, accountable government," Watson said. "And because it's not partisan, you're finding support from conservatives and liberals, and Democrats and Republicans. So I think we have a good shot of passing good government legislation." More money could come to the Texas budget from the federal stimulus that passed the Senate Tuesday afternoon. Details still have to be hashed out before the state knows just how much money it will get.
