Watson named one of Texas’ Best Conservation Legislators

Senator Kirk Watson has been named among the Best Conservation Legislators in Texas.

The Texas League of Conservation Voters issued its scorecard Thursday looking at the voting record of legislators on conservation issues during the 82nd Texas Legislative Session.  Senator Watson received the highest score in the Texas Senate for his support of legislation that would protect the environment and promote conservation.  He was the only senator recognized for having a perfect record on these issues.

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition for work in an area I’m so passionate about,” Senator Watson said.  “I especially appreciate the recognition of my Water Stewardship and TV Recycling legislation.  While it was a tough legislative session in many ways, I think these new laws could do a lot to promote the environment, economy and quality of life for people across Texas.”

“Once again, Sen. Kirk Watson was an environmental champ at the Legislature. This session, Sen. Watson successfully shepherded two important bills through the Legislative process: a landmark bill on water stewardship and another to implement a television recycling program in Texas. Sen. Watson also played a vital role in floor debate on TCEQ Sunset and limiting the damage of Senate Bill 875, and earned another perfect 100% voting record on this year’s Scorecard.”

The Water Stewardship legislation, Senate Bill 449, will take effect if Texans pass Proposition 8 on the November 8 constitutional ballot.  It creates an incentive for landowners to manage their property in a way that conserves water and bolsters Texas’ supply of it.  This new law would help the state create a clean, secure water supply for future generations of Texans, and it received significant bipartisan support during the session.

The TV Recycling legislation, Senate Bill 329, will require manufacturers who offer televisions for sale in Texas to implement ways for customers to give back and recycle TV sets – providing a convenient, environmentally responsible alternative to landfills or incinerators and helping to keep chemicals from seeping into our land, air and water.
