Dear Friend,

I love that old video of Bob Dylan flashing his song lyrics from a stack of placards.  It's iconic and honest.

As words define a songwriter, principles should define a legislator.  I'm grateful that you've allowed me to serve as your State Senator, and I wanted to report that we're making real progress in turning our shared principles into a better Texas.

During my initial year in office — and for the first time in the state's history — we passed legislation I authored that will allow Texans to start cleaning up electronic waste. The Senate also passed a bill I carried aimed at reversing climate change — the only climate change legislation to pass either chamber of the Texas Legislature.

We worked for better colleges and universities, won more money for children's health insurance, beat back bills that threatened our aquifer, our environment, and our neighborhoods, and launched a landmark ballot initiative to kill cancer.

And we stopped the tolling of open public highways, took action to block private companies from owning our public infrastructure in Central Texas, and began building a transparent, accountable, comprehensive transportation system that you control.

Even though the Legislature's out of session, I'm working hard to keep Central Texas healthy, improve our schools, protect our environment, and solve our traffic woes. And I will keep working to make sure Texas is living up to its responsibilities, its history, and its principles.

Thank you for your trust and support, and for allowing me to serve. While Central Texans may share a diverse set of opinions, we want the same thing: a Texas that learns from its past, takes care of its present, and lays a sensible groundwork for a strong, prosperous future.

If we can create that, like Dylan says, we'll be ready to go anywhere . . .

Yours,

Kirk Watson
