State officials encouraged Texas school districts to clean up their school bus fleets Thursday.
Officials from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Texas Senator Kirk Watson and the Executive Director of the Texas PTA gathered Thursday to talk about how simple it is to retrofit school buses so they produce fewer emissions.
Districts can earn grant money if they make the pollution-cutting changes. As many as 51 Texas school districts received grant funds last year, and there’s $8 million left for school districts that haven’t applied yet.
Senator Watson singled out one school district in particular.
“I want to applaud Lake Travis ISD for going after these funds and in doing so, looking out for the health of the kids in Central Texas,” Watson said.
The TCEQ’s Clean School Bus Program will accept applications through Dec. 15.
