Less Is More

I’ve mentioned before that I’d been training and losing weight (more accurately, attempting to lose weight) in preparation for a half-marathon in San Antonio on November 13.
Well, the more-observant of you will have noticed that the big day was, indeed, this past weekend. So I picked up my race packet, laced up the shoes, and took my place at the starting line.

Hey, you. Yeah, you. Have you voted yet?
No? Really? What's up with that?
There are only three days of early voting left – the last day is Friday. Then comes Election Day on the following Tuesday.

... Being outside and enjoying festivals. On Saturday, I attended the 24th Annual Elgin Hogeye Festival.
Elgin's a wonderful community of around 8,100 people, located about 20 miles east of Austin. The historians tell me that, back in the old days, the area went by a couple of names, including the nickname "Hogeye."

I can finally quit worrying about how my running and weight loss program seems not to be catching fire.

As it says, this is a “watershed moment” in the long effort to take advantage of the huge economic, educational and health benefits that a medical school, teaching hospital and health science center could offer.

A kid buys a dog from a guy for $100. But when he goes to pick up the dog, it's dead. The guy tells him it died after the kid agreed to buy it, so, tough luck, he's not giving the money back. But the kid hauls off the dead animal anyway.
A few months, later the guy runs into the kid and asks what he ever did with that dead dog. The kid says, "I held a raffle. I asked, 'Would you be willing to pay $10 for a dog?' I collected $1,000."

It’s Time For ...
Tuesday, September 20, 2011
Earlier today, I delivered a speech declaring that it’s time for a medical school, teaching hospital and research institute in Austin. I also outlined the process I’m proposing to finally get it done after all these years, as well as the group I’ve put together to lead the effort.
How You Can Help

The fires that have blackened so much of Central Texas have also brought out our heroes.
Professional and volunteer firefighters have contained most of the fires that burned across the region over the past week and a half. And the biggest of them, in Bastrop County, is more than 60 percent contained.
