. . . Nothing (except my fall fundraiser at Zilker Park . . . this year with Patty Griffin) is perfect. While we’re just on the cusp of fall, we’re well into flu season. This year, we’ll be fretting about H1N1, also known as swine flu. I’ll let you figure out which of those names is worse.

So, in considering this day, these values, the historical enormity of September 11th and the still smoldering pain we share, we should look to the experience of those who came before us. We should look to our parents and grandparents. For as we think about what this day will mean eight and eighty years from now, their example – as with so many things – continues to guide us.

The state has a designated fund to expand and improve hospital services – and, by extension, help Texas hospitals achieve these important milestones. And there are hundreds of millions of dollars – money that’s mostly collected through fines on driving offenses – sitting in that fund and waiting to be given to hospitals that need it.

Someone pointed out to me recently that, LBJ's birthday nothwithstanding, there isn't a real big holiday this time of year. So the Texas Legislature had to go and make one. Starting today and running through Sunday is the state's Sales Tax Holiday.
